In 2006 the singer/songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae from Leeds, England released her self-titled debut album, a record she had recorded on a shoestring budget. Word-of-mouth buzz built over the months leading to its release, and when it hit, success was instant and immense. It sold nearly 4 million albums, all the while keeping an amazing mix of refreshing authenticity and mystique so rare in these days of prepackaged pop. Corinne was nominated for four GRAMMY awards including Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 2007 (both for "Put Your Records On") as well as Best New Artist, and then Song of the Year AGAIN in 2008 for a second single "Like A Star."
In January 2010 came The Sea, Corinne's long-awaited second album. Once again the result was an artistic and commercial success, debuting in the Top 10 and receiving rave reviews. The Los Angeles Times called it "a remarkable accomplishment", NPR's All Things Considered deemed it "a massive leap forward" while People described it as "almost painfully exquisite." Shrugging off any kind of sophomore slump, Corinne Bailey Rae has truly arrived as one of the premiere performers of the young century.
Rae has always been devoted to making the world a better place. She serves as Special Ambassador for CORD, which works with communities affected by violent conflict. She also serves as Central Ambassador for Pump Aid, an organization that assists in remedying the water crisis in Africa. This year, Rae joins (RED)NIGHTS as a performer, where she'll use the power of her music to help save lives in Africa.
